PACE Union Strikes at USEC's Paducah Uranium Enrichment Plant
BETHESDA, Md., Feb 4, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Members of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers (PACE) International Union Local 5-550 ceased work today at 7:00 a.m. CST at USEC's Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Paducah, Kentucky.

This comes after PACE members voted last Friday to reject a contract proposal resulting from negotiations leading up to the expiration of the current labor contract.

"After many hours of hard work and negotiations with the union, USEC made a fair and competitive offer," said Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Dennis Spurgeon. "We have encouraged and supported continued negotiations, including offering to secure a federal mediator to assist us in our negotiations, and we hope that the union will agree to that."

"We will continue to operate the plant at current levels under a production continuity plan, which maintains safe operations using trained employees," said Spurgeon. "USEC does not expect any interruption of its product deliveries to its customers."

The local PACE union represents approximately 635 Paducah employees or about half of the Paducah workforce. The contract was scheduled to end Friday morning, January 31; however, union workers continued to work until this morning. The contract proposal offered by USEC would cover a five-year period.

USEC Inc. (NYSE:USU), a global energy company, is the world's leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
